3304 Sports: a ticket to the big leagues for Sports Media and Analytics majors at Virginia Tech.
On January 31, 2024, 3304 Sports—a sports journalism club at Virginia Tech—had their first general meeting of the spring semester. Speakers from each department of 3304 came up and presented to a group of aspiring Sports Media majors about what this extracurricular has to offer.
Members of 3304 Sports, old and new, are reminded of the opportunities they can gain to expand their knowledge of broadcasting and writing. For those who enjoy authoring articles, snapping photos, and appearing on camera, opportunities of all sorts are presented to those who want to have a career in these fields.
An opportunity that 3304 provides is play-by-play announcing for Hokie sporting events. Giovanni Heater, one of the announcers, explains that “... if 3304 didn't exist, I don't know that I would have come to school here ...” while also expressing how “3304 has given me experience that I don't think I would have got at any other school.”
Through 3304, Heater was able to travel to several venues across the East Coast to call games; more recently, he traveled to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to cover the battle between Virginia Tech and the University of North Carolina’s women's basketball teams.
Kyle Marshack was among the few who were able to travel to different venues to report sports, stating that “[I have] done play-by-play for 3304 at places such as Rutgers University SHI Stadium, Louisville University’s KFC Yum! Center, the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, and even the Greensboro Coliseum for the ACC Men’s/Women’s basketball tournaments.” The JPJ Arena in Charlottesville, L&N Federal Credit Union in Louisville, and Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill are a few locations on his resume he has sideline reported at.
With March Madness right around the corner and both men's and women's Hokies in the running for a spot on the bracket, you can bet that 3304 will be on the case to report the event in full.
